Treating Authorship Like Your Business

If your highest dream is to simply write a book and maybe even publish it, then I’d like to challenge you to think bigger. I’ve spent half my life studying business and how it can merge with my passion for writing. There is a myth called: “starving artist”. In my opinion the reality is that we are not paid in pennies because we are lacking in any way. It’s often not because another author’s story is “better” that it succeeds. We don’t treat our goals like business milestones. Instead we hold back. We won’t allow ourselves to dream bigger.

Scaling your author business is where you can build your impact. Many of us write because we believe we have something to say. I personally write so that my readers can feel seen. The bigger my author business, the more people I can reach.

But how can we change our perspectives and become entrepreneurs? You don’t need an MBA, all  you need is a willingness to learn and an iron will to persist. Stop thinking about what you can “sell” to your audience and start discovering what your audience “needs”. Starving artists fight for sales, entrepreneurs solve problems and receive compensation for it.

How accessible is your book? Do you have several platforms or multiple formats available? Yes? Great. You have a marketable product. But we don’t want to just be some extension of Amazon right? We want to change the world, at the very least, we want to help people.

When have you been on a podcast or stage where pushing your book was an after thought? I believe we all have incredible wisdom and live experiences that could help others. We should be sharing it. Tell me your journey, your struggles, your perseverance, your achievements. Encourage us to follow our dreams the way you are. Do this, and the sales will follow.
